Josephine Creek – Oregon Gold Location

Illinois River & Josephine Creek

Located in the western side of Josephine County, between latitude 42'13' and 42'29' N, longitude 123'38' and 124'05' W, the Illinois district had a total production in 1852-1953, between 5,000 and 10,000 ounces of Oregon placer gold along the Illinois River downstream from the mouth of Josephine Creek, and were very productive. The Illinois River and tributaries  were worked almost continuously from 1852 to 1942, and actively continues today by hobbyist gold prospectors and serious miners. The river flows west into Curry County.

Some of the tributaries such as Althouse Creek and Briggs Creek have already been described and Josephine Creek will be described here. The first discovery of was made in 1850 and was made at the mouth of Josephine Creek and not long later Josephine Creek and it’s tributaries. Canyon Creek, Days Creek, and Fiddler Gulches, were places where gold mining was quite productive. The bedrock is decomposed serpentine, and aside from gold and platinum group metals in the waterway, gold is also found in two partially cemented gravel benches. The highest of which is 150 above the current stream level. These gravels were worked by hydraulic methods as well as, by drifting . Up to 20,000 ounces of Oregon gold was recovered. Between 1886 and 1911, considerable gold was recovered using hydraulic methods from a broad gravel bench on both sides of the Illinois River below it’s junction with Josephine Creek.

Much of the gold and platinum group metals found in the Illinois River and it’s tributaries came from mineralized zones in the district where there were small lode gold mines. Near the headwaters of the Illinois River where you would find Waldo, the famed “”Sailors’ Diggings” can be found. The Sailors dug a 41 mile ditch to bring water for the huge hydraulic and sluicing operation that soon followed. The placer mining continued into 1942, with intermittent activity into the present. This area is noted for large nuggets.

On Jack Creek and nearby Horse Creek in the Josephine Creek area, placers were worked extensively before 1910. No official records were found by the author on the total production of these two creeks.

Bonneville County Idaho Gold

There is very fine gold in the Snake River. Also a good place to look would be northeast of Grays Lake.

Southeast of Bone on Mount Pisgah in the Caribou Range, in T4S R44E, is the location of the Mount Pisgah district. It produced around 16,000 ounces of placer gold.

Both placer and lode mines were productive, but all the recorded production was from placers, which in the 1870’s yielded $250,000 in gold annually. In later years mining in the district declined, although some time after 1920 several unsuccessful attempts were made at dredging. From 1939 through 1959 only 459 ounces of gold was produced.

Most of the country rock consists of Mesozoic sedimentary rocks cut by dioritic dikes and sills. The deposits were described as large tabular masses of quartz that were shattered and then mineralized with calcite and auriferous pyrite. In most of the deposits, the pyrite is oxidized and the gold is free.

Very slim, you may find a few flakes but it may not be worth the trip out there. Although you could bring your detector so of you aren't finding gold you could detect a little.

Thanks Vance, yep super prospector 48"..purchased straight from Todd at Bazooka Gold Company. Price was $250, yea a little more than an A52 or something comparable, but think not having to classify and ability to process much more material will make the cost difference well worth it!!

48" length, 16" at the feed side, 9 3/4" behind grizzly at exit and approx 14 lbs...they offer two different weights variant on thickness of the abs plastic..I went with the heavyweight for durability, think the lightweight weighs between 4-5lbs less.

If I ever need a sluice this would be the one I buy. Seems like a no brainer in not buying the sluice as you do not need to classify.

Tridge & SoCal, thank you both for the data on your BGT's, I was not even aware of the two different raw material thickness's, good input there. I would opt for the thicker material myself as where I go things tend to get rough and equipment must be sturdy, me as well...............63bkpkr

AzV, but you need water to use them and I do not see you wringing out Cacti for the moisture, sometimes my brain gets me in trouble as I have a hard time stopping myself from teasing and I like it right back. Yes indeed the lack of classification is a real positive along with ease of clean out and the unit clears quickly for the next load.............63bkpkr
