In general, for a "Placer" gold claim, you first locate an unclaimed area of "BLM" Bureau of Land Management BLM, Bureau of Land Management Office Locations land, and if you find gold there and have "proof of discovery," you can then "Stake" a mineral claim. You'll find forms and a general description of the Claim Staking process here http://mines.az.gov/Info/claimforms.pdf

Are you saying that BLM has maps to existing claims so one would know where NOT to look?
I'm interested in buying/registering a placer claim and haven't figured out the best way to go, buy a registered one or find one to stake.

The BLM has a program called LR2000 that has all the info on active and inactive claims. They have changed how the program works so it is now more complicated to use. Get ahold of Tim C in this forum and he can help you. He is an expert on LR2000. That is one place to start. Another would be the county recorders office in the county you are interested in. You will find registered claims there and candetermine open areas from there with some research. Or just put boots to the ground and scout around.
Good Luck!
